Boston, MA - January 9, 2009
BOSTON – Jan. 9, 2009 – United Group Limited (UGL) Managing Director and CEO Richard Leupen recently presented a check to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino to support several programs under the auspices of the Mayor’s Office of New Bostonians (MONB). The $30,000 contribution supports the English for New Bostonians ($25,000) program, as well as the recent New Bostonians Community Day ($2,500) and We Are Boston ($2,500) events. The MONB was established in 1998 to meet the needs of the growing and changing immigrant and newcomer communities in Boston. It seeks to strengthen the relationship between diverse cultural and linguistic communities and the city, encourage economic development, promote leadership in immigrant communities and create a model of a welcoming multicultural city.
“Boston truly has become a model of a welcoming multicultural city,” commented Mayor Menino. “This has been accomplished by an army of dedicated city employees and volunteers, as well as continuing support from our public and private partners. UGL’s support of the Office of New Bostonians enables us to continue our success in making English classes available to the diverse community. It also supports cultural awareness events that create a fabric of support to help recent Bostonians succeed in their new home.”
This grant builds on past multi-year support of MONB programs by UGL Unicco, UGL’s Massachusetts-based subsidiary. “This is the second year that I have the honor to support Mayor Menino’s key program, which helps define Boston as a world-class city,” said Mr. Leupen. “Just as UGL supports the international community through our business interests, Boston nurtures recent immigrants with innovative language, training and recognition programs to make them part of the Boston community. We are pleased to see the direct results of our past contributions and look forward to our continuing relationship with Boston.”
